Mary Shelley’s novel, proportioned according to its parts

By Wendell Piez

The image is generated programmatically from an electronic version (transcription and encoding) of the novel Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. The base text is from the revised 1831 edition (the basis of most contemporary editions). Pagination also follows that edition. Volume divisions correspond to the divisions of volumes in the earlier (first) edition of 1818.

The best way to gain an understanding of this depiction is to compare it closely to the text of the novel.

The designer knows this is an ungainly and even monstrous creation, and begs your pardon and indulgence. While not responsible for its faults and errors, earlier scholars, editors and text encoders who have represented the novel and its transmission, and on whose work these efforts have depended, are nonetheless owed acknowledgement. Too numerous to name, they include Charles Robinson, Stuart Curran, Neil Fraistat, and staffers at e-text centers in Virginia, Maryland and elsewhere.
